The regulating body for lawyers in Ontario is the Law Society of Upper Canada. LSUC’s various roles are, for the most part, unknown by lawyers and the public. Below is a brief summary of some of LSUC’s
- Regulating and licensing lawyers and paralegals
- Maintaining the lawyer referral service for members of the public searching for a lawyer practising a particular area of law
- Investigating complaints as between lawyers and as between the lawyers and the public and disciplining lawyers as may be required
- Providing Continuing legal education courses for lawyers
- Promoting various programs such as Pro Bono Law Ontario
When looking for a lawyer, people often forget to check off the basic requirement of ensuring that the lawyer is in “good standing” with the Law Society. This information can be obtained online at www.lsuc.on.ca
