Why Women Are More Likely To Ask For Divorce

<?php echo get_the_title();?> | Goldhart Family Law

A recent study conducted by Michael Rosenfeld, Associate Professor of Sociology at Stanford University examined data from Stanford’s 2009-2015 How Couples Meet and Stay Together project discovered that women initiate divorce 69% of the time, while men initiate divorce 31% of the time. When it comes to non-marital breakups, however, both men and women initiate breakups equally. The study also suggests that women exhibit higher levels of dissatisfaction in a marriage than men, but in non-marital relationships, both genders exhibit equal levels of satisfaction.

The study further goes or stipulate that the reason women are dissatisfied is because of the expectations placed on them in the relationship. While gender equality has taken leaps in the workplace, husbands still often expect their wives to take on the majority of the housework and childcare along with their full-time jobs. This leads to women feeling constantly overwhelmed and underappreciated by their spouses.

Statistics also show that married women report higher levels of stress than single women, with one-third (33 percent) reporting that they have experienced a great deal of stress in the past month (8, 9 or 10 on a 10-point scale) compared with one in five (22 percent) of single women. The rise of stress, expectations and the energy required to maintain a continuously busy lifestyle are likely the reasons for women feeling dissatisfied and more willing to seek out a divorce lawyer.
